“Pinpointing shared neurobiology between language and rhythm traits through complex trait genetic approaches"
Abstract:
Creative uses of large-scale datasets, including neurogenomic data, have enabled new discovery into how common genetic variation in the population contributes to individual differences in musicality traits, including rhythm skills. I will present recent results demonstrating the genetic architecture of beat synchronization and how variation in these genes may connect to the neural substrates of human rhythm. Our work has also identified overlap between genomic correlates of rhythm in humans and songbird vocal learning. I will go on to present recent data showing how language traits in modern humans may share some genetic architecture with rhythm, with potential clinical-translational implications.
